Volunteer Nigel Burch mans the hub every Monday and Friday, and every second Wednesday 10am-3pm.
The hub has three PCs running Windows 7, 8 and 10, as well as a newly acquired iMac which was purchased via a grant from the Be Connected Programme.
Nigel offers training across a broad range of topics and issues including tablets, mobile phones, apps, e-mail, social media and the internet (users are welcome to bring their own devices and a spare keyboard, mouse and monitor is available if you need to bring in your desktop computer).
The free service is provided in a nonthreatening environment by someone who understands the problems faced in today’s ever changing and increasingly technological environment.
Usually one on one, Nigel has assisted with issues ranging between learning how to copy and paste, to understanding publisher and even assisting with hardware problems. He is also open to helping assist with Facebook and internet banking questions which are amongst the most popular.
The struggles many older people feel with technology is the fear of the unknown. Young people aren’t as scared to try or fail something and tend to share more with their peers.
The calm space allows for questions to be asked and problems fixed, putting people back on the right track, as well as learning new skills such as how to research via Google, watch videos on YouTube and navigate Google Maps.
With so many news stories about scammers and online security, the Windsor Community Hub provides a safe space to get comfortable with these concepts, especially for those who have retired from the workforce, and live further south in the municipality than the Beaconsfield and Exeter Online Access Centres.
