Trails Strategy

The West Tamar region is home to many trails that provide opportunities for a range of users including walkers, runners and cyclists. These trails provide opportunities for transport, exercise, recreation and sight-seeing for residents and visitors. This study has been undertaken with the goal of providing the strategic direction to guide the development of trails within the municipality towards a comprehensive trail network that is accessible for all and promotes active living, recreation and encourages tourism.

This study seeks to provide an action plan towards a comprehensive trail network that will facilitate the best outcomes for residents and visitors now and into the future.

West Tamar Council has previously undertaken several trails studies across the municipal area, identifying the need for trails, auditing existing trails, and investigating opportunities for new trails or extensions to existing trails. This study draws from these existing studies to produce a strategy that focuses on prioritising a list of new trails, trail extensions and trail upgrades. It also investigates opportunities for trail construction and trail improvement projects within growth areas, such as Legana, where a high number of residents are likely to benefit from additional trails, and where active development and subdivision may provide additional opportunities to secure land for trail development.
