West Tamar Council has closed the pedestrian bridge at Gravelly Beach due to potential safety concerns.

On Friday last week during an inspection, a Council officer noted changes in the surface of the footbridge.

Based on advice following an initial condition assessment, Council has closed the footbridge until further notice.

Council has since engaged the services of structural engineers, who will conduct a more rigorous assessment tomorrow (Thursday) to determine a practical path forward.

All council bridges are inspected annually for any potential concerns or defects. No issues with the pedestrian bridge were raised at the previous inspection.

Council appreciates the importance of the pedestrian bridge to the Gravelly Beach community and will work to remediate this issue as quickly as practically possible.

However, the safety of those who use the pedestrian footbridge remains Council’s main priority.

The two-lane vehicle bridge remains unaffected.
