Tasmanian Labor Senator Helen Polley, West Tamar Mayor Christina Holmdahl and Bass Labor candidate Jess Teesdale look over the draft plans for the Legana sport and community precinct.

West Tamar Council’s vision for an indoor basketball facility at Legana looks set to become a reality following federal Labor Party’s announcement of a $5 million election funding commitment.

Mayor Christina Holmdahl expressed her delight at today’s announcement by Labor Bass candidate Jess Teesdale, confirming that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government would allocate $5 million to construct a state-of-the-art, four-court indoor basketball facility at Legana.

This facility will be a key component of a broader sporting and community precinct, strategically located adjacent to the new Legana Primary School.

“The site already features a Council-owned cricket and school oval, recently completed, which will be accessible to students during school hours and available for public use after hours,” Mayor Holmdahl said.

The development of the precinct will be guided by the draft Legana Community, Sport, and Recreation Precinct Development Masterplan, which is due to go out to community consultation shortly.

The masterplan outlines the integration of the four-court indoor basketball facility within the precinct.

Mayor Holmdahl also highlighted that the Council had previously secured $150,000 from the State Government to support the masterplan’s development.

“We are thrilled by Labor’s commitment to Council’s vision for the Legana sporting and community precinct,” Mayor Holmdahl said.

“Basketball participation has surged over the past five years, driven in part by the success of the Tasmanian Jack Jumpers. However, Northern Tasmania faces a significant shortage of basketball courts.”

“This new facility will address some of these challenges and serve as a cornerstone of our new sport and community precinct,” she added.

In March, Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor and Bass MHR Bridget Archer announced the Coalition’s commitment to fund $5 million for the basketball facility if elected.
