At its March 2004 meeting council adopted the West Tamar Community Plan. The plan was developed over the preceding 12 months and is complemented by the West Tamar Health & Wellbeing Project August 2002 which was commissioned by the West Tamar Health & Community Service. The West Tamar Community Plan has been developed in conjunction with the West Tamar community. An extensive and thorough community consultation program was undertaken and was a critical element to the success of the completed plan.
The keys of the project were:
- To develop a better understanding of the key community and social issues
- To identify what actions can be taken to address key community and social issues including resources, roles and responsibilities and potential strategic alliances
- To produce a document that will strategically guide the work of council's Community Services Department for the next 5 years and which would be well-accepted by the local community, council and key community organisations.
The principles that underpinned the project included:
- Building on the knowledge of the local community, community leaders and local organisations.
- Building on previous studies, local research and community consultations
- Ensuring that local residents were consulted effectively and those who wished to participate were able to do so.
