Lead in Public Places

It is a requirement of the Dog Control Act 2000 that all dogs are kept under effective control at all times.

A dog is under effective control on a road or road related area in a built up area if the dog is secured and restrained by means of a lead not exceeding 2 metres in length and held by hand by a person of sufficient age and strength to control the dog.

A person must not have at any one time in his or her charge, more than 2 dogs on leads on a footpath or 4 dogs in a public place.

If a dog is tethered to a stationary object, is must be by a lead which is less than two metres long, and for a period not exceeding 30 minutes.
